Roma suffers from a free fall, and the cracks in the club’s walls have increased, with coach Jose Mourinho making headlines and the media in the Italian capital.
The Portuguese coach recalled his leadership of Inter Milan to win an unprecedented treble of titles during his last period in the country, after leading Roma to six victories in his first six matches in all competitions. And it seemed that Italy would be the right place for Mourinho to revive his coaching career, after he was sacked as coach of Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
But the results soon began to decline, and Mourinho’s team fell to seventh place in the league, after winning only five times in the last 13 matches in the competition. As has been the case throughout Mourinho’s history, the coach began to blame others for this decline.
Referees have been the target of Mourinho’s barbs on numerous occasions this season, while players have also been reprimanded after their humiliating 6-1 Europa League defeat by Norway’s Bodo Glimt in October. After the 3-0 defeat at home on Saturday against Inter Milan in a one-sided match from beginning to end, the press conference after the confrontation was stormy by the standards of the 58-year-old coach.
Mourinho said after refusing to answer a question from a journalist: Your work is much easier than ours. That’s why we make more money from you. And his television interviews were no less heated after he refused to take questions from experts in the studio, before making new excuses from his personal point of view only for this defeat.
The Portuguese coach referred to the list of absentees in his team, which includes Tammy Abraham and Rick Karsdorp, who are suspended and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini due to injury, after the defeat.
Mourinho told the Dazone platform: “Inter is stronger than us in normal conditions, and in these circumstances it is much stronger.” He added: Today, the options were very limited, with injuries and suspensions. Our offensive capabilities were practically non-existent, we had three chances and we did not score.
He continued: When you play with a new defensive system, you cannot receive goals like the first and third. With the club’s new owners, Mourinho will have plenty of time to consolidate the squad. But the huge difference in level between Roma and Inter showed how difficult Mourinho’s task was.
If these lackluster performances continue, Mourinho’s mood will not recede, and his controversial statements will continue to attract the media.
