The Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation in Indonesia said that a volcano on the island of Halmahera, east of the country, erupted today, Saturday, releasing a cloud of ash five kilometers high, while the National Disaster Management Agency affiliated with the center warned of the possibility of flash floods and cold lava flows.
Mount Ebo volcano erupted at 11:03 am (02:03 GMT) following a series of eruptions last May, after authorities noticed an escalation in volcanic activity beginning in April, which led to the evacuation of seven nearby villages.
The center said that a column of very dense ash shot towards the southwest, and that residents and tourists must maintain a distance of no less than seven kilometers from the crater of the active volcano.
Footage published by the center showed the volcano spewing ash, which became denser and eventually dispersed.
The Disaster Management Agency alerted local authorities to watch for secondary disasters such as flash floods and cold lava flows.
