MotoGP will have to wait another year to land at the KymiRing for the first time. The Finnish Grand Prix had been on the calendar for the first time in 2020, with the event being postponed for good twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
2022 seemed a good year for the “first”, because the inspection by Franco Uncini had already been set by the FIM for the definitive homologation of the track, and a test with the test drivers had already been planned for the weekend of 10 July , which would have represented the last race before the summer break.
This morning, however, FIM, Dorna and IRTA Sports released a short joint statement in which they explain the reasons that led to postpone the KymiRing event’s debut to 2023, which would also represent the return of the World Championship to Finland after 40 years.
“The homologation works of the KymiRing, together with the risks caused by the geopolitical situation in the region, unfortunately forced the cancellation of the Finnish Grand Prix in 2022”, explains the note, making a clear reference to the proximity of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but also to Finland’s intention to join NATO, which does not seem to be a pleasant thing for the Russian government.
“Current circumstances have created delays and jeopardized the work in progress on the new circuit. All parties therefore agreed that the debut of the event should be postponed to 2023, when MotoGP hopes to return to Finland for the first time. in four decades “.
According to what the statement says, at the moment there does not seem to be any intention to replace the gap in the calendar, because the text continues as follows: “The final calendar of the 2022 FIM MotoGP World Championship should therefore consist of 20 races”.
This means that, despite being the season with the most events in history, it will also have a very long summer break: after the Dutch Grand Prix, scheduled for the weekend of 26 June in Assen, the MotoGP will be back on track on 7 August at Silverstone. , for the British Grand Prix.
