In 2021 Fabio Quartararo at Assen and Silverstone was simply irresistible. In Great Britain a year ago El Diablo conquered the fifth and last success of the season, administering the advantage in the following three races and celebrating the title in Misano with two races to spare on the occasion of the third last act of the season.
In this 2022, meanwhile, a zero for the Yamaha rider arrived in the Netherlands, the first of the season, due to a “rookie error” to quote Quartararo himself who fell in an overly optimistic attempt to attack Aleix Espargarò in the hairpin to the left that characterizes the first sector of the Assen track.
This crash not only compromised Sunday in the Netherlands, but also puts the Silverstone one up on the schedule for 7 August when the World Championship will be back on track after the very long summer break that will last throughout the month of July. The Commissioners, in fact, have decided to punish Quartararo’s maneuver with a long lap penalty to be served in the first three laps of the British Grand Prix. Should Quartararo also conquer the front row, then he will necessarily have to get back on a track where with little top speed – Yamaha’s Achilles heel – it is not easy to overtake.
In addition to Quartararo also David Munoz and Adrian Fernandez in Moto3 will have to serve a long lap penalty due to the accidents caused today in the entry class race. Aleix Espargarò a year ago at Silverstone brought Aprilia to the podium in MotoGP for the first time and on the Northampton track Maverick Vinales with Suzuki in 2016 climbed the top step of the podium in the premier class for the first time in his career. A recovered Vinales and today finally on the podium in Assen could be a valid ally of Aleix in the comeback against Quartararo for the conquest of the world title. Quartararo has a 21-point advantage over the Aprilia rider in the standings.
