The Yamaha rider had fallen during the Free Practice of the Malaysian Grand Prix on Saturday, violently banging his left hand on the asphalt and suffering a bruise and laceration of the limb.
The Frenchman applied the ice and took part in qualifying a few minutes later, finishing last in Q2 and forced to start 12th on the grid.
After a check by the medical director of the World Championship, Dr. Angel Charte, a small fracture in the middle finger was found and intensive care and treatments were started to allow the reigning World Champion to rest on Saturday evening and take part in the race. , for which he has been declared suitable.
On Sunday Quartararo achieved one of his best performances of the season since the Austrian GP, returning to the podium (3rd) and bringing the final clash for the title with Pecco Bagnaia to Valencia.
On Tuesday, after returning to Europe, Fabio underwent a check-up visit with the physiotherapist in Nice, his hometown, where the prognosis of the fracture was confirmed and it was decided to carry out a small operation on the finger to fix the fractured bone.
Yamaha has confirmed that the rider will have to undergo the surgery, but that he won’t do it before the end of the season.
“It’s all right, Fabio has undergone a check and will have to undergo a small intervention which is not urgent, so it will be done after Valencia”, where the last Grand Prix of the season will be held next week, followed by the first day of the pre-2023 Tuesday, November 8.
Yamaha hopes to be able to offer Quartararo the new prototype with which it will compete next year after a 2022 in which it suffered more due to the lack of power of the M1 so it seems almost impossible to defend the title centered in 2021.
