Mugello has been his kingdom for the last two years and Pecco Bagnaia made this clear in the Friday afternoon session of the MotoGP Italian Grand Prix. The Ducati rider was the only one capable of breaking the 1’45” barrier and set the best time in 1’44″938, coming close to the Tuscan up-and-down record which already belongs to him.
The only flaw in his day is a potential impediment against Alex Marquez for which he ended up under investigation before the time attack. Therefore, now we will have to wait to see if the commissioners decide to take action against him.
Behind him, Yamaha confirmed itself as the happy note of the day, at least with Alex Rins. The progress made with the new aerodynamic package approved after the test carried out in Tuscany two weeks seems to be there for all to see, because the Spanish driver finished with the second fastest time, just 273 thousandths from the top. The downside is that his teammate Fabio Quartararo will have to go through Q1 tomorrow morning, because he was unable to do better than the 11th time, being beaten by just 19 thousandths.
Despite a good performance at Biondetti 1, in which he literally destroyed his GasGas Tech3, Pedro Acosta returned to the track without any particular hesitations with his second RC16 and took third place at 388 thousandths, even if for him it was already the second fall of the day after the one this morning. Once again, however, his is the only KTM to have achieved Q2, with Brad Binder having a time that would have qualified him canceled due to track limits and finding himself 13th and Jack Miller who is actually 17th ahead of the wild card Pol Espargaro.
The other surprise of the day was Miguel Oliveira, who with the Trackhouse RS-GP climbed up to fourth place by just over four tenths, making it the best of the Aprilias. However, the two bikes of the official team managed to get through to Q2, even if just by a whisker: after the best time this morning, Maverick Vinales placed ninth, just ahead of “Captain” Aleix Espargaro. After the great performance in Barcelona, however, Raul Fernandez this time did not go beyond 16th place.
Sandwiched between the Noale bikes is a Ducati poker led by Marc Marquez’s GP23, which finished at 407 thousandths. The eight-time world champion preceded the two GP24s of Enea Bastianini, who only moved up at the end, and of Jorge Martin, who up until now seemed less brilliant than usual. The last one to reach Q2 was Alex Marquez, who did well to take advantage of his brother Marc’s driving force to set the eighth fastest time.
This means that the two standard bearers of the Pertamina Enduro VR46 will also have to pass through Q1, with Fabio Di Giannantonio who finished 12th and Marco Bezzecchi who was 14th. However, Franco Morbidelli was also delayed, following the Rimini driver in 15th position. The first of the Hondas, that of Takaaki Nakagami, was only 19th, while Luca Marini closes the group once again, more than 2″ behind. Aprilia wild card Lorenzo Savadori also did better than him, 22nd.
