Sustainability means the Mugello International Circuit. It is no coincidence that the Ferrari plant was the first in the world to obtain the prestigious recognition of “Achievement of Excellence”, the highest level of environmental sustainability certification issued by the FIA (International Automobile Federation), as well as being the first to obtain ISO 20121 in 2020 and the only circuit in the world with an integrated certification system.
Among the many firsts, also the first MotoGP circuit to host hives for pollinating bees to send a strong message of awareness on the importance of bees for the ecosystem and biodiversity. In fact, we must remember that bees perform an essential function within the food chain. Bees are in fact responsible for approximately 70% of the pollination of all living plant species and guarantee 35% of global food production. Precisely for this reason, its protection and that of pollinating insects in general is of fundamental importance in order to preserve the already precarious balance of our ecosystem. But the surprises don’t end because for the occasion the curbs of this special curve have only been colored yellow and black.
Among the many related activities that have made Mugello a protagonist in terms of sustainability is the creation of the KISS program – Keep it Shiny and Sustainable – in 2013 which was later adopted as a model by Dorna for other circuits.
From its creation to today, every year the project has been enriched with multiple initiatives and solidarity and involvement activities have been introduced towards the most disadvantaged categories. But also a collection of food surpluses, education on the use of running drinking water to reduce the production of plastic waste and some fundraising actions for charities.
But that’s not all because the Mugello circuit is a green lung of undoubted importance since it features 900,000 m2 of green areas and 300,000 m2 of wooded areas, in which 254 trees were planted in the period 2020-2021. Thanks to the two poplars (white and italic) an assimilation of approximately 103,886 kg of CO2 (103,886 t of CO2) is estimated. In short, a great way to reduce the emissions released into the atmosphere, directly reducing the impact on the environment.
The plant, in addition to taking care of and protecting the flora present, has also activated several important projects aimed at protecting its fauna in equal measure. In fact, every year preventive capture of wild animals is carried out with the Territorial Hunting Environment of Florence. To better protect the environment and promote biodiversity, nests have also been set up for migratory birds and feeders for fallow deer.
Furthermore, the circuit area is particularly suitable for the settlement of different species of animals. Among the many, we find first and foremost roe deer and fallow deer, but there are also examples of foxes, wild boars and porcupines. This winter, additional nests for migratory birds and feeders for fawns were placed.
A track therefore which, in addition to being among the most beautiful in motorsport, is becoming, or perhaps already is, an example of what it means to be at the cutting edge.
