The two days of testing at Misano gave a small taste of what could be the values in the field for the 2023 season. It is still very early to sum up, indeed. But certainly there is a certain optimism in the Yamaha factory, a manufacturer who has worked more than the others and who leaves the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli with great satisfaction.
Fabio Quartararo signed the track record in the last afternoon session, but Franco Morbidelli can also be satisfied with the solutions he has tried, which he promotes with flying colors. The Roman driver closed the final day with the ninth fastest time, half a second behind his team-mate leader in the standings. The only aspect that was missing was the time attack, but between the engine, aerodynamics and chassis, Morbidelli can’t help but smile.
“In these two days I have completed many laps and tested a lot of material. I was able to try everything with Japanese precision. This test was fun because I went fast. I signed my best time on day two by mounting the medium tire and this gives us confidence as we look to the future. So we will also have to understand how to use the tires better ”, says Morbidelli, very happy with the responses from the two days of testing.

The riders were looking for a reaction from Yamaha and this has come. Both Quartararo and Morbidelli had a lot of work to do with a view to 2023, especially in terms of the engine. Already on the first day the sensations were good and on the second day they had to be confirmed to direct the development in view of the next season: “The impressions of Day 1 have been confirmed, in Yamaha they have done an incredible job and we must congratulate, because the engine is a clear step forward. Everything you could possibly want has arrived. And a significant step forward both in terms of top speed and acceleration ”.
The engine, however, cannot be used during this season and from Aragon the two Yamahas will return to the version that does not particularly satisfy them. Quartararo also joked about it at the end of the tests, and Morbidelli echoes him: “At Aragon we will use the 2022 engine, so a little time will pass and this will make us forget the benefits of the 2023 engine”.
Net of this second uphill part of the season, there is optimism in view of next season: “The new chassis is not to be discarded. Then we gathered some important information, we are driving strong and we take care of the details, they are the ones that in the end make the difference. We are close to the top five, despite being far from the top in times. But that’s because I didn’t do the time attack. Overall, however, I am happy ”.
