In the first day of activity on the track at Lusail, Suzuki seemed to really be the bike to beat, confirming the very positive feelings that emerged from the tests and highlighting a surprising step forward even on the flying lap, historically the main problem for the Hamamatsu house. On Saturday, however, he did not confirm the same impressions, with Joan Mir and Alex Rins who were unable to go beyond the eighth and tenth position in Q2, thus forcing themselves to the umpteenth comeback race after the many already faced with the the same common thread in past years.
As reported by the German site Speedweek, however, the 2020 world champion tried to make the best of a bad situation, recognizing the need to take further steps forward on the flying lap but not precluding the possibility of fighting at the top for tomorrow’s race. “Overall, it was a positive day – commented the 24-year-old rider – we worked hard for the race, to improve our bike with used tires. We are in a good position, so I’m happy I was expecting a little more – he recognized the Spaniard – but we suffered from the wind. We need to work harder on this. However, we cannot say that the qualifications were bad; I’m only three tenths behind. I also did my fastest lap alone and with a headwind. If I had taken a trail it would certainly have been possible to do more. The next time we have similar conditions, I will know what to do and adjust my strategy. Eighth place isn’t bad for me to start with. Let’s see what I can do in the race. I’m not worried, we have the pace to fight ahead, ”he concluded.
