No one has ever doubted Jorge Martin's speed. What he perhaps lacked last year to become world champion were experience and the ability to read difficult situations as best as possible to avoid making mistakes. In this sense, the Jerez Sprint was a real graduation exam for the Prima Pramac Racing rider, who was one of the few to manage to stay out of trouble when as many as 15 of them ended up on the ground.
And he did it in a great way, because he went on to get his second seasonal victory in a short race on Saturday, also extending his lead in the world championship standings (his direct pursuer Pedro Acosta is now at -29), given that most of his pursuers instead they were among those who were surprised by the damp patches still present on the asphalt of the Andalusian circuit after the crash in the morning.
In the final, one of the most experienced riders probably gave him a nice gift, because “Martinator” had resigned himself to the idea of finishing second, but in front of him Marc Marquez ended up spinning, serving him the success on a plate silver.
“I try to do the best I can, using my head a little more. Today was a day in which it was easier to fall than finish the race, so in the out lap and in the warm-up lap I tried to do a lot pay attention to where there was still water, because even watching the Moto2 I saw that in some places it was still wet. It was essential to understand where to pass and be strong in the first laps”, Martin told Sky Sport MotoGP.
“I made a good start, even if I had some problems with the devices on the first lap, but then I managed to take a good pace and overtake Binder, who was tough for today. Then I made a mistake at turn 7 and Marc he caught me and passed me. I tried to stay close to him, but he was very fit today and certainly my real position was second. I would have been happy with it, but in the end he made that mistake and at that point I only cared about finish, because Acosta was far behind,” he added.

Regarding the problem with the device, he explained that his Ducati remained low on the front until turn 5: “I wasn't able to brake very hard at turn 1, even though I overtook Marc. Then I tried again at turn 2, but he remained signed. We have to understand for tomorrow if we have to change something in the system, but in the end I made a good start and that is the most important thing.”
But the shivers didn't end there, because he also went through the wet at turn 7 on the seventh lap, but miraculously managed to remain standing: “I had a bad time because I thought I was going to fall. At that point I knew that that half second I had on Marc was gone and in fact he overtook me straight away.”
Net of the error, today Marquez gave the sensation of having a little more than him, but the Madrid native seems convinced that with the medium tire he will be able to try to make his life complicated, even if he expects that there will be different ones who will aim to WIN.
“Tomorrow we'll race with another tyre, so I think it will be a different story. Yesterday I hadn't worked at all with the soft, so I entered the Sprint a bit in the dark and in the end I wasn't very happy with the grip of the rear Instead, yesterday with the medium I did 11 laps in a row with a very good pace, so I'm calm, because I think it's a much more stable and more consistent tire, which makes the bike easier to ride anyway with a Marc like that , with Pecco who will certainly want to make up for it, we will have to push because it will be a very long and complicated race”, he concluded.
