He touches it, sees it up close, but at the moment he finds it difficult to get there. Marc Marquez and victory have not yet met, but at Mugello the Gresini rider gave a strong signal by finishing the Sprint in second position, behind only the elusive Pecco Bagnaia. Starting from fourth place, the eight-time world champion got off to a bad start, but he didn’t hesitate to throw himself into the fight for the top, which he finished almost a second and a half behind the “host”.
Although a second position may seem like a defeat, especially for a rider of Marquez’s caliber, for Marc it is a great result which is a symptom of an adaptation to the Ducati now almost complete and a demonstration of strength: “I’m happy to be able to be in front and fight with leading riders like Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin showing speed.”
Martin started from pole, but missed a golden opportunity by ending up in the gravel. Bagnaia, on the other hand, dispelled the curse of the Sprint by proving himself unbeatable, as confirmed by Marquez: “Since Friday morning, Pecco showed himself to be slightly above everyone else, but I tried anyway in the Sprint. Little by little I got closer, but we had a similar pace and when at the last attack I had to lower the tempo a lot, I made a mistake. But I’m happy to be the second Ducati on the track. We need to improve the start, for once starting from the front I started badly, so this is an aspect we need to work on.”
Once another small problem is solved, can victory be within reach? Marc laughs when asked the question and answers with great sincerity, claiming to have come close. However, it is not a goal that obsesses him: “Victory? If you’re second, you’re closer than ever, so it’s close. But this thing doesn’t obsess me. I’m already satisfied just by being at Mugello with the riders in front, we notice that on this track the GP24s have something more, but we are there with the GP23″.
