The market pilots from the MotoGP is set to go crazy in 2024. The vast majority of riders in the premier class will end their contracts this year, after a 2023 characterized by an unexpectedly busy transition season. So let's take a look at where the teams stand this season and when their contracts expire.
Duration of MotoGP rider contracts: when do they expire?
*Multi-year contract subject to conditions
Ducati – contracts of Pecco Bagnaia and Enea Bastianini
- Pecco Bagnaia renewed with Ducati before the start of the season and has a contract until 2026.
- Enea Bastianini has a contract with Ducati until the end of 2024.
The Borgo Panigale team has secured its first two riders until the end of the 2024 season, and doesn't need much more when it has a bike that is conquering the class. Ducati has two-time reigning MotoGP world champion Pecco Bagnaia, who has in fact renewed before the start of the 2024 season for another two years until 2026. Enea Bastianini managed to save his place by prevailing over Jorge Martin thanks to his good finish to the 2023 season and taking advantage of the fact that the Spaniard was not champion. But he will have to earn a renewal for 2025, with many candidates for that position.
Yamaha – contracts of Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins
- Fabio Quartararo ends his Yamaha contract at the end of 2024
- Alex Rins has signed for Yamaha for 2024 for just one year
Yamaha is not going through a good moment and this has pushed them to sign Alex Rins to support a struggling Fabio Quartararo for the 2024 season in the premier class. The Spaniard joined the Yamaha after just one season in LCR, where they were able to see how complicated the situation is in Honda, but they won't have an easy life with the Iwata team if they continue to explain that the Frenchman doesn't keep what he promises. For the moment, the Catalan has signed for one year, until the end of 2024. For his part, El Diablo he has already warned Iwata's house that they have very little time to convince him not to leave in 2025. He also confirmed to have already had some initial contacts with other MotoGP manufacturers.
Honda – contracts of Joan Mir and Luca Marini
- Joan Mir ends his contract with Honda at the end of 2024.
- Luca Marini joined Honda in 2024 and has a contract until the end of 2025.
Ultimately, the bad omens came true for the Honda e in 2024 he was unable to continue with Marc Márquez in his garage, after 11 golden seasons, but with a complicated ending. The eight-time world champion, tired of fighting against the RC213V, headed to Ducati, in the Gresini team, to return to winning, and without his trusted technical team with the exception of Javi Ortiz. It is therefore Joan Mir who inherited the reins of HRC, with a bike that looks set to rise even higher next year, although there is still work to be done.
On the other side of the box is Luca Marini, who created the his desire to be an official MotoGP rider… And with a two-year contract, instead of one, as initially offered by the Japanese brand. In this way, the “blood” of Valentino Rossi returns to the winged manufacturer, the #10 is one of the few riders with a contract beyond 2024. Mir, meanwhile, is waiting to see how the new RC213V feels.
KTM – Brad Binder and Jack Miller contracts
- Brad Binder has a contract with KTM up to and including the 2026 season.
- Jack Miller ends his contract with KTM at the end of 2024.
The Austrians also have great security for their long-term project, given that they have one of their drivers tied up until 2026. Brad Binder will be their top driver for the next few years, while Jack Miller has his seat secured until 2024, although it won't be a surprise to see real competition for second place with the promotion of Pedro Acosta to MotoGP.
Aprilia – contracts of Aleix Espargaró and Maverick Viñales
- Aleix Espargaró has a contract with Aprilia until the end of 2024.
- Maverick Viñales will also end his contract with Aprilia at the end of 2024.
The Italian company seems to be making progress, even if it still has some work to do to reach the best bikes on the grid. The duo of Aleix Espargaró and Maverick Viñales will also continue in 2024 to try to make the Noale team a serious contender for the world title, even if it will be difficult given the level of the Borgo Panigale team during the winter. It should be remembered, however, that both they and KTM will benefit from concessions this season, albeit fewer than those of the Japanese factories.
Pramac Racing – contracts of Jorge Martín and Franco Morbidelli
- Jorge Martin will end his contract with Pramac Ducati at the end of 2024.
- Franco Morbidelli has a contract with Pramac Ducati only for 2024.
The Ducati satellite team is a trusted place to move up to the factory team, and Jorge Martín came close in 2023, although it was stopped in favor of Bastianini after failing to win the title. Therefore, the Spaniard remains with Paolo Campinoti's team in 2024, looking to win his first MotoGP World Championship and join Bagnaia in the future. The rider from San Sebastián de los Reyes has already declared that his goal is to become an official rider, and hopefully this will happen in 2025, in Ducati or elsewhere, where he will have many options. Martin reiterated that he has clear priorities, even if he is not thinking about the market.
The truth is that Pramac already seems to be moving towards a possible departure for the Spaniard, whether he remains in Borgo Panigale or not. In addition to Franco Morbidelli, who joined the Italian team to replace Johann Zarco, it should be noted that the Moto2 star Fermín Aldeguer has committed to Pramac to move up to MotoGP with them in the 2025 season.
- Marco Bezzecchi has renewed for one year and ends the contract at the end of 2024.
- Fabio di Giannantonio joined the team in 2024 and has a one-year contract.
Valentino Rossi's team has confirmed its duo for 2024. After third place overall in 2023, Marco Bezzecchi will remain after having renewed for a year, waiting to see how the market will move to try to find an official place. Luca Marini was expected to catch up with his compatriot, but the Italian moved to Honda to realize his dream of becoming a factory rider. There team #46 then secured Di Giannantonio, after convincing at the end of last season following his forced departure from Gresini.
Gresini – contracts of Marc Márquez and Alex Márquez
- Marc Márquez has signed a one-year contract with Gresini for 2024.
- Alex Márquez completes his contract with Gresini at the end of 2024
The Gresini Racing team is one of the most interesting teams in the 2024 MotoGP market. The team led by Nadia Padovani has one of the most highly rated riders on the grid, Marc Márquez. The eight-time world champion he found his perfect escape from the Honda ordeal in the Ducati satellite team, a project to find his smile again, but where he only has a one-year contract, waiting to see what options he can get for 2025. He will be there with him his brother Alex Márquez, also out of contract in 2024 with the team founded by Fausto Gresini, at least for the moment.
Marc Márquez
LCR – contracts of Takaaki Nakagami and Johann Zarco
- Nakagami has a contract with LCR Honda until the end of 2024.
- Johann Zarco has signed a multi-year contract with Honda, at least until the end of 2025.
Honda is not going through a good moment and the farewell of a rider to a direct rival, as happened with Alex Rins, is indicative of this. Takaaki Nakagami will continue this year too, despite everything, in the LCR team which will try to help the Repsol team more, thanks to the arrival of concessions for HRC. Alongside the Japanese there will be Johann Zarco, who arrives with a multi-year contract, at least until 2025, after leaving Pramac, where Ducati wanted to offer him a year before presumably moving on to World Superbike.
GasGas Tech3 Racing Team – contracts of Pedro Acosta and Augusto Fernández
- Pedro Acosta has a contract with GASGAS KTM until the end of 2026.
- Augusto Fernandez has a contract with GasGas until the end of 2024.
It wasn't easy for Tech3 GasGas to choose its drivers for 2024. And not exactly due to a lack of options. After his good rookie season, Augusto Fernandez was re-signed for this year, but Pol Espargaró was also under contract. However, it was necessary to make room for Pedro Acosta and the Catalan in the end he stepped aside to unblock the situation and become a tester for the Mattighofen team. Many eyes will be on Acosta and KTM has ambitious plans for the Spaniard's future in MotoGP.
Trackouse Racing – contracts of Miguel Oliveira and Raúl Fernández
- Miguel Oliveira has a contract with Trackhouse until the end of 2024
- Raul Fernandez has a contract with Trackhouse until the end of 2024
Both riders of Aprilia's satellite team, which is Trackhouse this year following RNF's departure, have secured their places for the next MotoGP campaign, with Miguel Oliveira and Raul Fernandez remaining in place until 2024. arrival of the team that races in NASCAR has led to closer ties with the Noale factory, which will see the Portuguese start with this year's RS-GP, while the Spaniard will receive it throughout the season.
