Team radio in MotoGP?
Jorge Martin’s mistake has brought back into the spotlight the question of possible Radio communications between pit wall and riders in MotoGP. Being able to discuss with his engineers in the pits, the Spaniard from the Ducati Pramac team would have avoided stopping to change his bike at the first drops of rain, safeguarding part of his advantage over Pecco Bagnaia in the general classification? A question that is difficult to answer, but which could lead to different outcomes if asked again in a few years: according to what was reported by Motorsportin fact, right on the weekend of the San Marino GP in Misano Adriatico, the Dorna has organised a meeting on Thursday to discuss the possible introduction of team radios even in the premier class of the MotoGP.
Dorna, three-phase experimentation
It must be said that, at least for the moment, the negotiations seem to concern only possible radio messages aimed at improving safety. In a first phase that should start in 2025, the riders would in fact be put in communication only with the Race Direction, which could thus warn those on the track of any accidents or perhaps particularly slippery conditions of the asphalt, either due to the arrival of rain in a certain section of the circuit, or due to the presence of oil leaking from some bikes. The first part of the experimentation should then be followed by a phase-2, scheduled no earlier than 2026, in which the drivers could also talk to the stewardsanswering their specific questions always related to safety.
The Radio Problem in MotoGP
To achieve a Formula 1-style implementation, with MotoGP champions able to exchange information with the pit wall, as well as with Race Direction, instead, we should wait for the third and final phase of testing of the system which does not yet have a set date. A choice that, in Dorna’s ideas, should also help to increase the spectacle since it would provide fans at home with more information on strategies and what is happening on the circuit. However, there are also doubts of a practical nature on the functioning of the system, perfectly explained by Marco Bezzecchi in the post-Misano interviews: “In my opinion it is really difficult to listen to someone talking to you while you are riding a motorbike.because you are not still. I also tried this solution, but you can’t hear anything. The bike makes too much noise and we can’t put earplugs, because ears are essential for balance anyway”.
