The 2027 season will mark a new era for MotoGP. We have known for some time now that the current regulatory cycle would end and the basic lines of what the new rules would be were already quite clear, but as of this morning everything was put in black and white by the FIM and Dorna.
850cc engines
The first confirmation is that at the end of the 2026 season the era of 1000cc engines that began in 2012 will also come to an end. As has been hypothesized for some time, the new engines will have to be 850cc and will always be four-stroke. However, it will not be possible to try to experiment with imaginative solutions, because the regulation requires that they be four cylinders, with a reduction of 6 millimeters in terms of bore.
There will also be a reduction in the units available to the drivers to complete the season, which will become 6, but will remain 7 if there are more than 20 races on the calendar (today there are 7 or 8 depending on the number of GP). What remains is that manufacturers who enjoy the full concession package will be able to use two more units, just like today.
The reduction of the tank capacity to 20 liters (today 22 litres) can then be considered as linked to the engine, with the possibility of continuing to use 11 liters of fuel for the Sprint. It is also confirmed that from 2027 fuels that are 100% of non-fossil origin must be used to encourage the green transition towards a zero-emission series.
Lowers are prohibited
Another of the expected aspects that has been confirmed is the abolition of the lowering devices. Until some time ago there was discussion of the possibility of eliminating only the front ones, but in the end any type of solution of this type was prohibited. Indeed, it will no longer be possible to use even the holeshot devices designed only to improve the start.
The aerodynamics have been reduced and the rear one must also be approved
The other aspect on which, as expected, there has been a crackdown is the much-discussed aerodynamics. The reduction in the permitted wing surfaces will be significant, with the width of the front fairing being increased from 600 to 550 millimetres. The overhang allowed for the front wing compared to the front fairing will also be reduced by 50 millimetres.
But there is another aspect that is very important: until now, manufacturers could work on the rear of the motorcycle without homologation constraints. From 2027, however, everything mounted on the tail must also be homologated, with the possibility of making an upgrade during the championship. All these aspects added together will also lead to a reduction in the minimum weight of the motorbikes, which will drop to 153 kg compared to the current 157.
The concession system remains
The concession system also remains alive: since it is a new regulation, everyone will start from the same basis. This means that the manufacturers already present in 2026 will have those relating to band B. The complete package of concessions, so to speak what Honda and Yamaha have today, therefore with the possibility of using the owners in tests, plus non-frozen engines and more freedom of aerodynamic development, will instead be reserved for any manufacturers who will enter in 2027. Just as with the current system, the bands may be revised during the summer break.
