Today, Monday, the world celebrates Mother’s Day, and as it is used in some countries, “Mother’s Day”, which falls on March 21, which marks the start of the spring season. It is a celebration that emerged recently at the beginning of the twentieth century, celebrated by some countries to honor mothers and motherhood to demonstrate the impact of mothers on society.
This appeared at the desire of Western and European thinkers after they found children in their societies neglecting their mothers and not fully taking care of them, so they wanted to make a day a year to remind the children of their mothers.
Later, the number of people celebrating it expanded until it was celebrated on many days and in various cities in the world, and it is mostly celebrated in the month of March.
The date of Mother’s Day varies from country to country. For example, in the Arab world, it is the first day of spring, i.e. March 21, in Norway it is celebrated on February 2, in Argentina it is October 3, and South Africa celebrates it on May 1. In the United States and Germany, the celebration is on the second Sunday of May every year, and in Indonesia they celebrate it on December 22.
The first Mother’s Day celebration was in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in America. After that, she started a campaign to make Mother’s Day recognized in the United States.
Anna Jarvis is an American activist born in 1864, whose mother always said: “Sometimes, somewhere, someone will call out the idea of Mother’s Day.” Her desire translates into that if each of these warring families honor the mother Celebrating her would end the strife and hatred that filled hearts, and when Anna’s mother died, she swore to herself that she would be the one who would make her mother’s wish come true.
Although Anna Jarvis was successful in 1914, she was disappointed in 1920, because they said she did it for the sake of trade. Cities adopted Jarvis’ Feast and it is now celebrated all over the world. In this tradition, each person presents a gift, card or memory to mothers and grandmothers.
Most cities have derived Mother’s Day from holidays that appeared in the United States. It was also adopted by other cities and cultures. There are other cases, as some countries previously had a day to celebrate to honor motherhood. After that, I adopted many of the external things that happen on American holidays, such as giving the mother carnations or gifts.
The first person to think of a Mother’s Day in the Arab world was the late Egyptian journalist Ali Amin – founder of Akhbar Al-Youm newspaper with his brother Mustafa Amin. Ali Amin put forward in his daily article the “idea” of the idea of celebrating Mother’s Day, saying: “Why do we not agree on a day of the year? We call it “Mother’s Day” and make it a national holiday in our country and the countries of the East.
Then it happened that one of the mothers visited the late Mustafa Amin in his office and told him her story and how she was a widow and her children were young, did not marry, and dedicated her life for the sake of her children.
And she continued to take care of them until they graduated from university, got married, took their lives, and left it completely. So Mustafa Amin and Ali Amin wrote in their famous column, “An Idea,” suggesting that a mother’s day be set aside as a day to return the favor and remind her of her grace. The letters were pouring out on them encouraging the idea, and some suggested that a week be devoted to the mother and not just one day, and others rejected the idea on the pretext that all days of the year For the mother and not just one day. However, the majority of readers agreed with the idea of allocating one day, and then it was decided that March 21 would be Mother’s Day, the first day of spring; To be a symbol of openness, serenity and beautiful feelings.
