The Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday that Britain had requested permission to fly an RC-135 spy plane over Russia.
“We consider this behavior a deliberate provocation,” the ministry said, adding that the Russian Air Force “has been assigned the task of preventing the violation of Russian borders.”
The ministry stressed, in a statement, that “all the possible consequences of this deliberate provocation fall entirely on the British side.”
On Monday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that a Russian fighter scrambled to intercept a British RC-135 reconnaissance plane that crossed the Russian border near Cape Svyatoy Nos.
The ministry indicated that a Russian MiG-31 fighter forced the infiltrating British reconnaissance plane out.
However, a source in the British Ministry of Defense denied that London had requested permission to fly a spy plane over Russia.
