A cost for companies that extends beyond motivated absenteeism, since in the second quarter of 2024 almost 308,000 workers were absent from work every day without a medical justification, as revealed by the latest work absenteeism report published by Randtad. Furthermore, with respect to the 275,410 workers who were absent without apparent reason in the same period of 2021, it represents a 12% increase in three years. And of the total of 1.44 million people who did not go to work on a daily average in the second quarter, those who do not have medical justification are 21%.
In general terms, the balance sheet of the company specialized in human resources warns that the level of absenteeism It was located between April and June in the 6.6% of the agreed hourswhich represents an increase of one tenth compared to the 6.5% at the end of 2023. In the case of absenteeism due to temporary disability, or with medical leave, the rate was 5.2%, two tenths above the record from the end of last year.
“Absenteeism in the Spanish labor market remains at high levels and we are not achieving a sustained reduction in it, something that we consider very serious, because it increases the costs of companies and ends up reducing their competitiveness,” he warns. The industry, the sector with the lowest
By sectors, the industry concentrated the highest level of absenteeism in the second quarter, with 7.1% of the total agreed hours, followed by the services sector, with a rate of 6.7%, and construction, with 5.2%.
According to Randstad, the analysis by activities shows important differences. Thus, the sectors that present the highest absenteeism are the gambling activities (11.3%), the tobacco industry (11.3%), postal and courier activities (11.1%) and building services and gardening activities (11%).
On the contrary, the sectors with the lowest absenteeism are activities related to employment (2.5%), legal and accounting activities (3.3%), architectural and engineering technical services (3.5%), real estate activities (3.5%) and publishing (3.5%).
By autonomous communities, the Basque Country was the one that registered the highest absenteeism rate in the second quarter, with a total of 8.6% of the agreed hours, followed by the Canary Islands (8.3%), Galicia (7.8%) and Asturias (7. 8%). The lowest levels of absenteeism occurred in the Balearic Islands (5.1%), Community of Madrid (5.7%), Andalusia (6.2%) and Valencian Community (6.2%).
