The Community finalizes the expansion of the first of them and the declaration of the Cabo Cope area as an area of high environmental interest
Yesterday, the Autonomous Community took a new step to protect the marine reserves of Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas and Cabo Tiñoso. It did so through the renewal of the agreement with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, an agreement that focuses on the joint management of spaces and facilitates the control of activities, protection, surveillance, the operation of services and maintenance of technical means.
The Minister of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies, Antonio Luengo, and the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Alicia Villauriz, signed the agreement in the Aguirre Palace, in Cartagena. With a duration of four years, it replaces the one that was in force until now. It will also include the new marine reserve that will be established, most likely next year, in the Cabo Cope area. This will be the third in the Region of Murcia, “which will make us the Community with the largest number of marine reserves of fishing interest per kilometer of coastline in Spain,” Luengo said.
The counselor assured that “marine reserves constitute a specific measure that contributes to achieving a sustained exploitation of resources of fishing interest, establishing specific protection measures, which allow the improvement of the conditions of reproduction of the species of fishing interest and the survival of their youthful forms.
The Ministry announces the installation of ecological anchorages and aid for fishermen due to the loss of working days
Another of the projects promoted by the regional government is the expansion of the Cabo de Palos-Islas Hormigas Marine Reserve by 190 hectares, from the current 1,898 to 2,088. It especially affects cove areas, which are of great interest for spawning and recruitment of species.
For her part, the Secretary of State announced that ecological moorings are being installed in the conservation areas to prevent boats from anchoring on the oceanic posidonia meadow bed, as established in the Mar Menor Management Plan and the Coastal strip submerged.
€12,000 per boat
Alicia Villauriz also announced that as of this year fishermen will begin to receive aid from the central government for the reduction in catch days established by the European Union. Although he did not specify the amounts that will be distributed, the president of the Murcian Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds of the Region of Murcia, Manuel Ballesta, indicated to LA VERDAD that they could be between 11,000 and 12,000 euros, depending on the type of boat.
