Her life changed forever on March 24, 2012, when she was seriously injured while on a mission in Afghanistan, in the district of Gulistan, Farah province. She was hit by some mortar rounds, as a result of which she had to amputate her leg. For her valor and her commitment in the army, Monica Contrafatto was decorated, the first female soldier of the Italian Army, on May 4, 2015. Then she became a Paralympic athlete, protagonist of the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games, winning a medal bronze in the 100 flat meters category T42, within the historic hat-trick that brought her to the podium together with two other blue, Ambra Sabatini and Martina Caironi.
