Moldova refuses to support the Western sanctions imposed against Russia, said Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister of the Republic Nikolay Popescu, writes RIA News.
According to him, Chisinau has been following this line since 2014. In the future, the state will pursue the same policy for economic reasons, he added. As the minister clarified, decisions on the introduction of new restrictive measures are not easy for countries stronger than Moldova. “Since 2014, it has been decided not to join Moldova to the EU or US sanctions against Russia, we support this line,” he stressed.
He explained that the country’s economy is highly dependent on relations with Russia, including in the energy sector. Now Chisinau maintains a dialogue with Moscow on a technical level, mainly the discussions concern assistance to Moldovan citizens trying to return home.
Several countries immediately imposed sanctions on Russia after it launched a special operation to protect Donbass on February 24.
