Forecaster Pozdnyakova: frosts in Moscow are dangerous for plants
Prolonged abnormal cold in Moscow poses risks for plants. The danger of frost in the capital was revealed by the chief specialist of the Moscow Meteorological Bureau Tatyana Pozdnyakova in conversation from KP.RU.
According to the weather forecaster, the weather established in the first ten days of May is typical for the second ten days of April. “Freezing is dangerous for flowers that have already bloomed – apple trees, for example. I’m afraid that this year many summer residents will be left without apples, gooseberries and currants,” Pozdnyakova warned.
The specialist recalled that the latest frosts occurred in the capital on June 12, 1899 – 125 years ago. Record low air temperatures in May were also recorded more than 100 years ago. For example, on May 13, 1884, thermometers in Moscow dropped to minus 1.9 degrees Celsius.
Earlier, the scientific director of the Hydrometeorological Center, Roman Vilfand, called the beginning of May 2024 in the European part of Russia the coldest in history.
