Middlesbrough has caused a stunt in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The Championship team defeated Manchester United at Old Trafford on penalties. Cristiano Ronaldo missed a penalty in the 20th minute. After 90 minutes it was 1-1. No goals were scored in extra time.
Cristiano Ronaldo may have missed a rare penalty, but thanks to a goal from Jadon Sancho, United still had a 1-0 lead. Until Middlesbrough, with Anfernee Dijksteel in the starting line-up, equalized just after the hour via Matt Crooks. A goal that, to everyone’s surprise, was not disallowed due to clear hands from declarant Duncan Watmore. Strangely enough, both referee Anthony Taylor and the VAR saw no problem. A crucial decision, because thanks to the goal, Middlesbrough was able to force extra time.
Because there were no more goals, we got penalties at Old Trafford. Both teams remained clear for a long time, until Man United youngster Anthony Elanga kicked his penalty high. Middlesbrough experienced a fairytale at the Theater of Dreams, for Man United it became another nightmare.
In the competition, Manchester United is no less than 19 points behind city rivals City. Ronaldo and co were already eliminated in the League Cup, and so the FA Cup was the last remaining realistic chance to win a prize in this new ailing season.
