Mexico.- The Ministry of Welfare seeks to make the pension for people with disabilities becomes universal, so that more Mexican citizens with this condition can benefit.
Through a statement, the federal agency explained that in order to achieve the universality of the pension for older adults, state governments will be required to give 50% of the amount, while the federal government contributes the other 50%.
At the second work meeting for the Universal Pension for Persons with Disabilities, the head of the Welfare Secretariat, Ariadna Montiel-Reyesstressed the importance of the different levels of government working in a coordinated manner in the activities that make up the registration of the new beneficiaries of the program implemented during the government of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

In this sense, the federal official emphasized that the contributions from the governments of the federal entities will help to expand the pensions for people with permanent disabilities.
For her part, the Undersecretary of Welfare, María del Rocío García Pérez, maintained that the Mexican federal administration has focused on the implementation of actions that promote, recognize and guarantee the exercise of the rights of all people with some type of disabilitythis as a factor to promote social change at the national level.
“In the Ministry of Welfare, I add, we are clear that moving from a welfare model, like the one that lasted for many years, to one of guaranteeing rights, requires concerted decisions, joint and coordinated work that results in effective actions in favor of of those who need it most,” he said.
Currently, the pension for people with disabilities applies only to minors, as well as for young adults up to 29 years of age. In addition, people aged 30 and even before 64 years of age can also access it, provided they live in indigenous or Afro-Mexican communities.

The pension for people with disabilities, as well as the pension for older adults and the Benito Juárez Scholarships, are three of the mechanisms through which the federal government provides economic support to different unprotected sectors of Mexican citizenship.
