The Minister of Education, Giuseppe Valditara, declared that, to encourage the integration of foreign students in our country's schools, in each class the majority of students should be of Italian nationality. The proposal is causing discussion, but not only because some consider it discriminatory: in the social message in which he explains his position, in fact, the minister stumbled upon at least a couple of obvious grammatical errors and used a form that many find appeared unclear.
“If it is agreed that foreigners assimilate on the fundamental values written in the Constitution – wrote Valditara on X – this will happen more easily if the majority of classes are Italians, if they study Italian more intensively where they do not already know it well, if Italian history, literature, art and music are taught in depth in schools, if the parents will also be involved in learning the Italian language and culture and if they do not live in separate communities. It is in this direction that we intend to move.”
In the long post, the error in particular stands out consecutive temporum of the verb “teach” – the League minister writes “teach” rather than “teach” – and the final sentence, in which Valditara says “direction that we intend to move” rather than “direction in which we intend to move”.
“Minister, now rewrite it in Italian. So, perhaps, we can understand exactly what he said,” comments the account of the Pd deputies. And even the Democratic senators observe: “Minister Valditara, before worrying about foreigners, learn to write in Italian. So we understand what he says.” At the bottom of the post, there are also many comments from private users who point out the ungrammatical Italian of the Minister of Education.
But Valditara's position alarms the opposition, in particular the Democratic Party, especially on the merits: The Minister of Education “runs after Salvini's delusions”, attacks the dem secretary Elly Schlein.
The proposal on classes with an Italian majority in fact follows closely the idea launched a couple of days by the leader of the League: “If you have many children who speak different languages and not Italian, it's chaos”, Salvini said as a guest on TV of the program Door to door. “We need to check the presence of students. 20 percent of foreigners in a class is stimulating, but when Italians are a fifth of them, how can a teacher explain?”.
“The Italian school – replies the group leader of the Democratic Party in the Culture Commission of the Chamber, Irene Manzi – has demonstrated that it knows how to integrate without this cheap propaganda. It would be worth knowing better what already happens in many schools with high immigration that can be found around Italy. It is necessary to try to implement specific accompaniment and mediation strategies and actions for foreign students. Let's leave the best choices to promote school integration to the autonomy of the school community, and not to the impromptu outbursts of the Minister of Transport.”
