On a sunny May day in 1993 a luxury car, escorted by two motorcycle cops, drove into a narrow lane of a residential area in The Hague on the edge of the dunes. Moments later, the car stopped, the door swung open and Mikhail Gorbachev got out. The former president and party leader of the Soviet Union, who had ended the Cold War and opened the door to democracy in Eastern Europe, went for coffee with 90-year-old economist and Nobel laureate Jan Tinbergen.
