Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced today, Saturday, the cancellation of the cabinet session that was scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, due to the attempt of some to drag the country into a sectarian division to fuel conflicts.
Mikati said, in a statement today, “Given the new circumstances related to the attempt of some to drag the country into a sectarian division to fuel conflicts, and because we bear the constitutional responsibility with national conviction, but without allowing us to be dragged into suicide or into something that does not resemble our convictions, for all these reasons we announce the cancellation of the cabinet session.” that was scheduled for Monday.
He added, “Instead of the national and political leaders taking international stances and warnings about the seriousness of the situation into account and uniting to complete the required treatments, and activating emergency meetings and interest in discussing how to get out of the risks expressed by the International Monetary Fund, instead of all that, we are witnessing an attempt to drag the country into a sectarian division to fuel conflicts.” And giving a purely administrative procedure an obnoxious sectarian turn,” referring to the postponement of the start of daylight saving time from midnight Saturday-Sunday 25-26 March this year to midnight 20-21 April next.
The head of the Lebanese caretaker government continued, “The deputies and the concerned political and spiritual leaders have the responsibility to elect a new president and form a new government. Let each party bear its responsibility.”
He said that the process of electing the President of the Republic constitutes “the priority required to complete the convening of the constitutional institutions and restore full order to the Lebanese state. This matter, which we stress in all our positions, meetings, and meetings, bears the responsibility of the deputies who are only required to elect the president and not hesitate in carrying out this constitutional duty.”
And he believed that “some are trying to divert attention from his obstruction of the election process or his failure to secure the required consensus to complete this election, by aiming again at the government that is striving to ensure the continuity of the work of public utilities and addressing basic issues as much as possible and as capabilities allow.”
