“In this sense, the team has decided to suspend Miguel Ángel López from any activity within the team until all the circumstances of the case are clarified,” added the Astana statement.
‘Supermán’ López, 28, is being investigated, but has not been arrested, within the framework of the Ilex operation for drug trafficking, sources of the investigation informed Efe.
In May the UCentral Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard arrested in Cáceres within the framework of said operation the professor of the University of Extremadura Marcos Maynar for an alleged crime of illegal drug trafficking and who years ago was accused of administering doping substances to athletes.
According to sources close to the investigation, the arrest took place after searching his office at the Faculty of Sports Sciences of the University of Extremadurain an operation directed by the Court of Instruction number 4 of Cáceres and carried out by agents of the UCO Health and Doping group.
The detainee was charged with a Crime against public health and another for illegal drug trafficking. Maynar was already arrested in 2004 for an operation against the trafficking of doping substances in gyms.
How does the network work?
In 2015 Maynar was one of the six defendants tried in Bilbao, later acquitted, in the case of the alleged doping of rowers from the Urdaibai rowing club.
Marcos Maynar, a doctor, was suspended for ten years by the Portuguese Cycling Federation when accused of supplying doping substances to the Maia cycling team.
A day later, after being released, Maynar himself explained to Efe that the judge ordered him to appear in court every 15 days and is investigating him for drug trafficking.
Maynar assured that the facts have nothing to do with doping, “which may have been a mistake” and “that is what will have to be studied” and it will become clear.
In addition, he rejected any relationship between the University of Extremadura and these events and attributed his arrest to the fact that they have “wanted” him since the Spanish Anti-Doping Agency and the UCO because the times he has been arrested he has been acquitted “and for something it would be”.
In his opinion, “it is a persecution” and he fully trusts justice “because neither justice nor judges have failed me.”
