Last Monday, June 6, the National Institute of Migration (INM) attended to the almost 7,000 members of the so-called migrant caravan that left Tapachula, Chiapas, headed for Mexico City.
The INM carried out these actions based on the Migration Law and its regulations, as well as dialogue with promoters of said march and representatives of people from Central America, Venezuela, Haiti and others.
Foreign migrants were served at 110 INM windows in the different representative offices in Chiapas and were given a migration document that proves their regular stay in the country.
These actions of the Mexican Government are carried out to guarantee foreigners their human rights, as well as safe, orderly and regular migration.
With the agreements reached thanks to the dialogue, migrants are prevented from being victims of criminals who are dedicated to human trafficking or traffickers who expose them to insecure conditions in strenuous walks, land, rail and raft transport or other types of mobility regardless of putting their physical and psychological integrity, as well as their lives, at risk.
Migration provides water, food, and care for migrants
During the walks carried out by the migrants, the INM provided them with water and food and in the agreements preference was given in the attention to vulnerable groups, while the family nuclei were transferred to the facilities of the System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF) in Huixtla.
The commissioner of the National Migration Institute, Francisco Garduño Yáñez, toured the border points in southern Mexico through which migrants enter, in order to supervise that those who are in a context of mobility are provided with quality care and warmth, and that they be guaranteed respect for their human rights.
These actions are possible thanks to the inter-institutional coordination of the Secretaries of the Interior, Foreign Relations (SRE), Health, National Defense (Sedena), and the Navy (Semar), as well as the National Guard (GN), and the National System for the Integral Development of the Family (DIF).
The government of the state of Chiapas and municipal authorities also participated; and the intervention of the National Human Rights Commissions (CNDH) is valued.
The talks were led by the General Director of Coordination of the INM Representation Offices, Héctor Martínez Castuera, who maintained his willingness to serve the migrant population at all times.
