Eighteen dams installed by mining company Vale in Minas Gerais need some type of “preventive intervention” capable of minimizing the risks of heavy rains that hit the state causing an accident. The information was released by the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MP-MG), this Wednesday (19).
Analyzing iinformation provided by the companies responsible for 31 dams in an emergency situation in the state, technicians from the State Foundation for the Environment (Feam) and the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais concluded that 18 projects, all belonging to Vales, have some occurrence to be dealt with in order to avoid further damage to structures.
Among the 18 structures that should undergo some preventive intervention, three were at level 3 of emergency, the most worrying: Dam B3/B4, in Nova Lima; to the South Superior, in Barão de Cocais and Forquilha III, in Ouro Preto. However, according to the MP-MG, the recent rains did not cause structural damage to any of them and the technicians limited themselves to asking the mining company to repair any erosion processes in the area around the projects.
The other 13 dams that were also in an emergency situation (levels 1 and 2) belong to the mining companies ArcelorMittal and Minérios Nacional S/A. According to the MP-MG, they did not show any damage or anomaly caused by heavy rains. Even so, they continue to be monitored.
Safety
In a note, the prosecutor, Carlos Eduardo Ferreira Pinto, highlighted that the requirement that the mining company Vale adopt preventive maintenance measures aims to guarantee the safety of the surroundings of the projects.
“The severe rains affected several structures that will require continuous and rigorous monitoring by the command and control bodies”, said the prosecutor. “Companies will be required to take all possible and necessary technical measures to ensure the safety of the structures”.
Feam and MP-MG notified Vale to adopt a series of preventive measures, such as maintaining and cleaning the dam’s drainage systems; reduce the rainfall contribution from the drainage basin to the dam reservoir; guarantee the routine maintenance of the structure, including the control of vegetation and correcting the erosive processes installed in the surroundings of the structures.
From the notification, which the Public Ministry claims to have made yesterday (20), the mining company will have ten days to present a technical report with information on the measures already implemented and the work schedule.
OK
Vale informed, in a note, that it will evaluate the set of guidelines made by the MP-MG and by Feam. The company has assured that its three emergency level 3 dams have not shown any recent structural changes and are only accessed by remotely controlled equipment.
“The three dams have already had their respective containments completed and the communities in the Self-Rescue Zones have been evacuated since 2019. The technical teams are currently carrying out an in-depth assessment to carry out the necessary improvements in the structures, especially in their accesses, affected by the intense rains in Minas General of the last days. To ensure the safety of its dams, the company monitors its main structures 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, in real time.
