Mexico City.- The governments of Mexico and Guatemala agreed to carry out simultaneous security operations on both sides of the border to ensure peace and tranquility in that border zone.
In a joint statement issued after a binational meeting that was held virtually, the two nations indicated that the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena) will send a mobile kitchen to the municipality of Cuilco, department of Huehuetenango, Guatemala, to contribute to the care of Mexicans displaced by the violence recorded in Chiapas territory.
“The two countries agreed to carry out simultaneous operations, both on land and in the air, on both sides of the border, to maintain permanent communication mechanisms and to convene a high-level meeting of the Mexico-Guatemala High-Level Security Group (GANSEG) at the end of August,” they said.
In addition, the Secretary of the Interior, Luisa María Alcalde, reported that a comprehensive plan of attention will be deployed in Amatenango de la Frontera, Chiapas, which is where hundreds of citizens fled from the scourge of organized crime.
This plan includes, among other actions, the implementation of social programs, health care and the deployment of a wellness market.
“The governments of Guatemala and Mexico reaffirm their relations of friendship and cooperation, as well as coordination with multilateral bodies, and guarantee full compliance with international law with the aim of offering protection to those who need it and moving towards a more orderly, safe, regular and humane migration management,” they said.
In the morning, during the session of the Security Cabinet headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrado at the National Palace, Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena reported that on July 23, the movement of around 400 Mexican people who crossed into Guatemala began, 61 of them have already returned to their communities and the Guatemalan authorities have delivered 207 certificates of humanitarian stay for 30 days.
