Maybe some of you don’t know it, but for a couple of months now Facebook which is now known as Goalhas been in legal trouble for certain uses of technology, as the state of Texas has launched a lawsuit against it for two years that the company has tried to avoid in order to avoid assuming the consequences. However, it seems that the ownership of Mark Zuckerberg andThere is not much escape route and it will be time for them to pay for their violations.
Facebook, through its parent company, has agreed to pay more than $1.4 billion to the state for violating privacy law billions of times by misusing technology that collected information from users’ photos and videos without their consent. This sanction, the largest imposed by a state in the United States, puts an end to a lawsuit filed by the US Attorney’s Office. Texas in 2022.
The Attorney General Ken Paxton accused the network of violating state privacy law by using its tag suggestion tool to collect residents’ biometric data, such as facial features and fingerprints, without obtaining their permission. Texas law, in place since 2009, requires companies to inform and seek consent from users before collecting such information, and places strict restrictions on the storage and sharing of this data.
The company decided to accept the settlement to avoid a lengthy litigation. Although it has agreed to pay the fine in installments over the next five years, the company has not issued a public apology, which has been interpreted as a sign of compliance with the penalty but without admitting liability. The agreement also reflects Texas’ strategy to attract technology investment, in a context of increasing regulation and government oversight of large companies in the sector, driven by federal government initiatives.
