Tragedy in Mestre, bus falls from an overpass
New accident in Mestre: stop to all electric buses
In Mestre a new accident involved an electric bus of the La Linea company, the same as the vehicle that fell from an overpass on October 3, causing over 20 deaths. This time the toll is 13 minor injuries but it could have been much worse. The driver of the vehicle, for reasons yet to be ascertained, lost control of the bus which invaded the opposite roadway and ended up hitting the pillar of the portico of a residential building.
The accident occurred shortly after 9pm on Saturday: the wounded and bruised were taken to hospital, two in Mirano, two in Dolo and 10 in Mestre. The firefighters with tank fire engine, crane and guard officer, state police, local police and carabinieri intervened on site.
La Linea is the same company that owned the bus that crashed from the Vempa overpass for reasons not yet ascertained. This time the driver declared to the rescuers that he had fallen ill. However, AVM, the company that manages urban transport routes, has announced that from Monday it will suspend the service of all La Linea’s electric buses as a precaution, replacing them with its own vehicles.
The Municipality of Venice thanked “the healthcare personnel who promptly intervened for the rescue, the firefighters and the police who followed the operations for the removal of the bus, the static control of the affected building and the reopening of the road” .
