In a big interview with the Spanish sports newspaper Diario Sports Lionel Messi looked back for the first time on the period leading up to his move to Paris Saint-Germain. The Argentine superstar says, among other things, that he wants to return to Barcelona in the future as a technical director, but whether that is under president Joan Laporta is the question. “His words hurt me. I don’t deserve that.”
Lionel Messi (34) left Barcelona with tears in August after 21 years after a legendary press conference. Not because of a ‘marriage crisis’, but because of major financial problems with his great love. In Diario Sport, he says he wants nothing more than to return to the Camp Nou when his Paris contract ends in the summer of 2023.
“I’ve always said I’d like to come back and help the club in any way I could. I want to be useful, to help. So that it goes well with FC Barcelona. I think it would be nice to be technical director, but I’m not sure if I can get that role and if I can get it at Barça. But if there’s an opportunity, I’m definitely open to it. I love Barcelona, really hope the club gets healthy again and continues to be one of the best in the world.”
Whether Messi will return under the wing of club president Laporta, who resigned Ronald Koeman as trainer last week, is highly questionable. In the conversation with Sport, Messi wants to rectify a number of things, including his salary at FC Barcelona. Laporta noted in an interview with radio station RAC1 early this month that he hoped Messi would stay free in Catalonia.
“The truth is that, as I explained when I left, I did everything possible to stay,” said Messi. “I was never asked to play for free. I was asked to pay my salary with fifty percent. I did that without any problem. That’s how I wanted to help FC Barcelona. It was my and my family’s desire to stay in Barcelona. The president’s words were really not okay. They hurt me “It felt like Laporta took the ball from me but then didn’t know what to do with it. He just didn’t have to say those things. Now people may think I’ve caused doubt. I don’t deserve that.”
muscle injury
For now, Messi is still at Paris Saint-Germain, but the transition to Paris is still going in fits and starts. On Friday against Lille, he dropped out with a muscle injury suffered earlier. ,,As a precaution”, coach Mauricio Pochettino after the 2-1 victory. ,,He could not continue playing. I hope it is not too bad and that Messi can be used against Leipzig.” PSG will play in Germany in the Champions League against RB Leipzig on Wednesday.
