Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is sure that a lasting peace in Europe can be achieved with the participation of Russia. She announced this on Thursday, October 6, at a ceremony dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in Munich.
“Until we really managed to do this, the cold war is not really over,” the agency quoted her as saying. DPA.
During her speech, she also noted that the conflict in Ukraine was a turning point, emphasizing the need to take the statements of Russian President Vladimir Putin seriously.
“We should all take words seriously and not classify them as bluff from the start,” Merkel added.
Earlier, on September 30, the former chancellor also stated the need to continue work on a common European security architecture with the participation of Russia.
On September 28, Merkel called taking Putin’s words seriously as a sign of political wisdom.
In June, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov commented on Merkel’s opportunity to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. Then he said that it was premature to talk about it.
Merkel herself noted that she did not seek to become a mediator in resolving the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, since she was not asked to do so.
On February 24, Russia announced the start of a special operation to protect the civilian population of Donbass. It began against the backdrop of the situation in the region that worsened in mid-February.
