Manfred Weber and Giorgia Meloni
Important step to change the balance in Europe
Meeting at Palazzo Chigi between the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, and the President of the European People’s Party and the Group of the European People’s Party, Manfred Weber, in Rome for the funeral of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Furthermore, on Monday Meloni will meet the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who will be in the capital for the presentation of the volume Wisdom and audacity with speeches by David Sassoli. On Tuesday, the prime minister will see the prime minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, for lunch, on a tour in view of the G7.
The meeting with Weber, in relation to which the Presidency of the Council has released only one photo, takes on a particular political value in the light of the new balances that are being defined in Brussels. This was underlined by the MEP of FdI, Nicholas Procaccini, recalling that “the dialogue between Conservatives and Populars has been going on for some time and is also strengthening thanks to the fact that the two political forces are consolidating in their respective countries”. The framework is that of a possible alliance between the two European families, in view of the 2024 elections, which could overturn the current arrangements.
“The German parties Cdu and Csu represent the main parties of the EPP. After an initial fair play, these two political forces are making increasingly vigorous opposition to the current socialist government of Scholz. With the end of the Grand coalition, reports between German Populars and Socialists are at a minimum and this will produce a knock-on effect also on the European Parliament”, Procaccini clarified again, speaking with theAdnkronos.
The FdI exponent, therefore, recalled that there is “a similar scenario” also in Spain, “where the opposition to Sanchez’s socialist government is creating a bond between the People’s Party and Vox, a party that is part of the family of European Conservatives”. So, “everything suggests, as far as we are concerned, that the 2024 vote will represent the last chance to have a European Parliament that takes the EU along the tracks we have always hoped for: a model of Europe that does not humiliate the nations but takes them into due consideration; that deals with less but more important things. Doing less, doing better: this – recalled Procaccini – has always been our motto”.
