“November 17 is a special date for us, first of all to commemorate the birth of our founder and what Salvatore Maugeri managed to build starting from what he was, as a man, as a scientist and as a doctor who had, also as a healthcare entrepreneur, the patient’s good is the only goal. And then to also celebrate what Maugeri’s human capital is: doctors, technicians, nurses, therapists who are the driving force behind translating what our founder wanted into concrete facts “. Mario Melazzini, CEO of Ics Maugeri Spa, today on the occasion of a day organized by the Clinical Institute and the Foundation, whose 56th anniversary is celebrated today, on the day of 116th anniversary of Maugeri’s birth.
“A human capital – continued Melazzini – which in the difficult years from 2012 onwards has remained united, has held the bar straight and which today in the pandemic has been able to change and adapt to the needs of the times we are living in, making itself available to institutions in that principle of subsidiarity that has always distinguished us “. The Foundation was born in 1965 in Pavia as a ‘labor clinic’, becoming ‘Salvatore Maugeri’ in 1985, on the death of the founder. After having expanded from occupational medicine to rehabilitation, in the early 2000s, it could count on a presence of about twenty institutes throughout Italy.
In 2016, following a profound corporate restructuring, it confers all welfare and research activities to Ics Maugeri spa, a benefit company and currently operates in six Italian regions (Piedmont, Lombardy, Liguria, Campania, Puglia and Sicily), with 17 Institutes, of which nine Irccs, ie hospitalization and scientific care, and 3 outpatient clinics dedicated to rehabilitation (Milan and Lodi). In Veneto there is the environmental research center – Cra, which deals with industrial hygiene.
Today Ics Maugeri has 2,300 beds in agreement with the NHS and hospitalizes about 25 thousand patients in its institutes followed by about 650 doctors (of which about 10% from outside the region), for about 639 thousand days of hospitalization. The employees are 3,600 overall and the annual turnover amounts to approximately 300 million and is one of the first and largest Italian benefit companies. During the various pandemic phases, Ics Maugeri hospitalized and treated over 6,000 Covid patients in its institutes, especially in Lombardy and Piedmont.
“We are proud of our past – he said Chiara Maugeri, vice president of the Salvatore Maugeri Foundation – because in occupational medicine and above all in rehabilitation we are the pioneers, but it is obvious that we cannot live only in the past. Taking care of the patient at 360 degrees is the real challenge of these years – he underlined – since the chronic patient is the one for whom the health system can do more, and we believe we can make a contribution to give support to the institutions so that this type of patient may have adequate responses. Salvatore Maugeri taught that in the first place there is always the person – he concluded – and that to achieve the only goal, which must be patient care, you need teamwork and that alone you are not effective “.
