Medicine, from Mantovani to Remuzzi: here are the Italians at the top of the world ranking of scientists

Immunologist Alberto Mantovani continues to be a strong standard-bearer of Italian research, recognized internationally by various rankings that evaluate the performance of scientists. The latest global ranking to crown him first among the top scientists in force in the institutions of the Bel Paese is the one drawn up and disseminated in recent days by the platform Research.coman organization that conducts various analyzes of this type and also evaluates the best universities.

Mantovani, scientific director of Humanitas and professor at Humanitas University, is 63rd in the world ranking of the ‘Best Medicine Scientists’, the best scientists in the medical sector, and first at a national level. This is a ranking that is in its third edition and combines data from multiple sources, including OpenAlex and CrossRef. Broadening the focus also to Italians abroad, the highest ranked overall is the oncologist Carlo Maria Crocebased at Ohio State University, 35th in the world (with an H-index in his discipline equal to 241, 264,424 citations and 1,524 publications).

Second in the Italian ranking and 92nd worldwide Giuseppe Remuzzidirector of the Mario Negri Irccs Pharmacological Research Institute, which boasts an H-index in its discipline of 206, and a ‘treasure’ of 250,108 citations and 1,611 publications. The first Italian woman in the world ranking – in 186th place – is Silvia Franceschi of the Cro (Oncology Reference Center) of Aviano, with a sector H-index of 189, 158,243 citations and 1,458 scientific publications. Franceschi is fifth in Italy.

In the ranking of top scientists in medicine, the first in force in an institution in the South appears to be Vincenzo Di Marzo, of the Cnr (National Research Council) network, based in Pozzuoli. For him, 633rd place worldwide and 15th in Italy with a sector H-index of 157, 90,762 citations and 848 publications.
