FC Barcelona left San Mamés with something worse than an elimination in the Copa del Rey round of 16 after falling to Athletic 3-2 in extra time, injuries to Ansu Fati and Pedri. Both footballers played their second match of the year after reappearing in the Super Cup against Real Madrid, but neither could finish the match against the lions.
The case that worries the most is that of Ansu Fati. The winger started the match on the bench and came onto the pitch in the 60th minute but only lasted 35 minutes. Five minutes into extra time, the player left the field in tears.
In the absence of new medical tests, the first information from the club indicates that Ansu suffers a muscle injury in the biceps femoris of the left thigh and, although it is pending evolution and the time off is not specified, he could be the next two months off the pitch.
The Spanish winger has barely been able to play 455 minutes spread over 10 games this season and if the forecast is confirmed, he will miss the league games against Alavés, Atlético de Madrid, Espanyol, Valencia, Athletic, Elche, Osasuna and possibly Real Madrid, the double confrontation of the Europa League against Napoli and in case of overcoming the playoff the round of 16.
As for Pedri, the midfielder started but the extra time was too much for him and he lasted until the 107th minute asking for the change and putting his hand on the back of his leg. The thing about the canary seems to be just a few cramps and it doesn’t seem like he’s suffering any injury, but he already shows the load of the last two games.
Gerard Piqué and Jordi Alba also finished the game with physical problems but as in the case of Pedri it doesn’t seem to go beyond a few simple annoyances.
