Media | Margot Chevrier's shocking injury was ignored on TV – this is how Yle explains the solution

Margot Chevrier's unfortunate race performance was not shown on Yle's broadcast. The head of Yle Urheilu Joose Palonen says that the decision was conscious.

French pole vaulter Margot Chevrier was badly injured in the World Athletics Championships on Saturday.

Chevrier, 24, suffered an open fracture in his leg when he failed to land on his first attempt to cross the 465 altitude.

In Finland, Yle showed the race broadcast on television and in Yle Areena. However, the broadcast did not show Chevrier's performance, which was widely talked about, as a result of which he had to stop the race.

For example, the Swedish public broadcasting company SVT showed the situation and also shared it on their website.

Yle Urheilu master Joose Palonen was reached via text message on Sunday to comment on the decision not to show Chevrier's jump.

“It was a conscious decision that we focused our broadcast on the matter of most interest to Finns at that point, i.e. Wilma Murron to the decision to suspend the pole vault final and the ongoing competition events,” Palonen wrote.

“Chevrier's jump was not seen live on the international race feed and there was no reason to show afterwards the slowdowns due to a nasty injury,” he continued.

However, Yle shared later on Saturday evening on their website photos of Chevrier, who was being treated at the scene.
