Though Colin McRae has linked his name to the Subaru brand, it was not the only car of his to go down in history as far as the WRC world is concerned. In particular, many remember the Ford Focus WRC with main sponsors Martini and Telefonica-Movistar, which the Scottish driver brought to numerous successes paired with the trusted navigator Nicky Grist.
In 2001 the two lost the world championship by only two points, behind the duo formed by Richard Burns and Robert Reid (on Subaru Impreza). Today one of the cars used by McRae that season is on sale thanks to the auction house Silverstone Auctions. The auction of the Y4 FMC car is scheduled for next March 5, and the valuation has been placed around 400 thousand euros.
The car has a good story to tell. He made his debut with a trio of victories in Argentina, Cyprus and at the Acropolis; she came in second place in the New Zealand Rally. With McRae really charged up, the last stage – the Rally of Great Britain – could have been a new triumph. However, on the fourth special stage, McRae reversed spectacularly. Losing, in this daring way, the title. Today we see this car in full shape, with all its original stickers, thanks to the regulations in force at the time for the WRC. In fact M-Sport rebuilt the car (a grind, given how the acrobatic Scottish driver had reduced it) to have it available for the 2002 season. It has never won a world rally again, but has still been used in local races. and then it received a restoration capable of bringing it back to 2001 specifications.
This car is certainly not a car to go commuting with, because it is especially suited to historical events. But whoever buys it will certainly experience the thrill of sitting where a beloved and respected driver like Colin McRae, who tragically passed away too soon, raced.
