Mazón links false controversies about drinking water and unblocking to confront the Government and divert attention

Cornered by his management of the crisis on DANA day, when he arrived late for the key meeting and his Government doubted for two hours whether or not to send the massive alert to mobile phones that would have saved dozens of lives, a questioned Carlos Mazón has began to stir up false controversies to divert attention from his way of acting and that of his team. The first false controversy arose this Sunday, about drinking water. This Monday, it’s the unblocking trucks.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition (Miteco), headed by Vice President Teresa Ribera, yesterday estimated at 60 the number of municipalities affected by DANA in which – in the presence of possible pathogens – it is recommended to drink bottled water or boil tap water . Furthermore, according to Miteco data offered by the supply companies, 7,000 homes remain without water supply, a figure that at the beginning of the catastrophe reached 600,000 families.

This Sunday Mazón described the recommendation to boil water as “erroneous.” The Valencian president has decided to dedicate his time to arguing with Ribera, whom the PP has been trying for days to place in the media spotlight. With his questioning of Miteco, it seems as if it were incompatible for Mazón to drink bottled water and, if it is not available, to boil tap water.

“Following the erroneous statements by the Ministry of Teresa Ribera, we consider it important to clarify the following official recommendations regarding the use of water. Public Health recommends the use of bottled water for drinking and cooking in all municipalities affected by DANA. The water can be used for showering and washing. There is free bottled water at the refreshment points in each town. If you have any questions, consult the municipal authorities,” Mazón wrote in a tweet.

“There are no official recommendations to heat the water,” Mazón insisted this Sunday before the media. The truth is that the central government itself, against which Mazón attacks, also recommended that same day – through its delegate in the Valencian Community, Pilar Bernabé – the use of bottled water for human consumption. This recommendation does not contradict or is incompatible – as is easy to understand – with boiling tap water if necessary. The World Health Organization already recalled in 2015, in your guide to drinking water qualitywhich is enough to boil water for at least one minute “to inactivate pathogenic bacteria, viruses and protozoa.”

sewer trucks

The second false controversy agitated by Mazón from social networks has to do with the sewer unblocking trucks. The president published the following tweet this Monday at 9:01: “We have been requesting sewer unclogging trucks from the Government of Spain for 3 days to avoid serious public health problems. They don’t arrive. We have asked the CEOE and the rest of the Autonomous Communities to contribute with all the means at their disposal. Thank you all for your invaluable help.”

The Government delegate, Pilar Bernabé, responded to Mazón’s tweet in person this morning, who reported that the request for sewage trucks was received on Friday at 11:26 a.m. and that at 11:42 all the Autonomous Communities were notified. “From there, the CCAA that have availability respond. The first to respond was Castilla-La Mancha, which offered 10. At this moment there are 30,” said Bernabé. He has also revealed that it was not until today, at the Emergency Center – in Cecopi – that the Mazón Government has estimated the number of sewer trucks needed at 150. “I recommend to the president that he work on the most appropriate way to request [los medios]which just with the tweet is not the most effective.”

“If the priority is sewage trucks,” said Bernabé, “we are going to work in all possible ways to obtain sewage trucks from wherever, and at the same time we call for all people, entities, CCAA, organizations private and public that can bring sewage trucks to the province of Valencia, let them do so. And we will stand alongside the Generalitat to act as a spokesperson for its responsibility, which is to ask for these elements.”

Bernabé has also explained how the request for material aid is managed: “From the Government of Spain we pass it on three times a day to the Emergency management [autonómica] a complete list of everything they have at their disposal from other Autonomous Communities and other countries.” In addition to the sewage trucks, the central government has sent the following means of water and sludge extraction: 13 teams of heavy extraction means and 188 teams of light means, which include 89 fire engines and 99 motor pumps.
