Kangoo has surpassed the milestone of 4 million units produced at the Maubeuge plant. A success crowning a career that began in the 1990s, when Renault decided to entrust the production of this vehicle to the Maubeuge plant, investing over 500 million euros to modernize the systems. 1994 was the year of the first exploit, with the installation of a thermal transfer press with 5,400 tons of pressure, one of the largest in Europe, for the molding of components such as the tailgate, the floor and the sides of the bodywork .
Production of the X76 began in 1997
The ergonomics of the workstations were then improved by installing, for the first time, variable height chains. Automated systems were introduced to improve safety and quality and it was also the beginning of a human adventure that marked entire generations of women and men. In 1997, production of the X76 (the industrial name for Kangoo) began. A fundamental stage in the history of Renault and the Maubeuge plant: for the first time a commercial vehicle stops being a “simple” commercial vehicle to become a “voiture à vivre” thanks to its modularity and versatility as well as its fun and functional design. Kangoo comes in two distinct versions, Kangoo for private individuals and Kangoo Express for traders, artisans and fleets, with tailor-made fittings.
A sliding door…
To deal with competitors who were forced to equip themselves with a sliding door, Kangoo was enriched, in 1999, with a second sliding door, thus increasingly responding to user needs. The Maubeuge plant had to quickly integrate this change into its production facilities, for example adding a second robotic island to secure the sliding side sheet metal door and manage the new ranges in the molding department. In July 2023, a new milestone reached by the Maubeuge plant was celebrated: 150,000 third generation Kangoos were produced. And, to complete the new range, the Grand Kangoo with its 7 seats was also presented at the IAA Show in Monaco in 2023, joining the family of the famous vehicle on the Maubeuge production lines.
