Heavy snowfall caused problems again on the A13 Brenner motorway. The section near Tyrol had to be temporarily closed. Nothing worked anymore and it remains dangerously smooth.
Vienna – Winter road conditions caused problems on the Brenner on Thursday morning. Heavy-duty transporters got stuck on the snow-covered road and had to be made afloat again. Within a short time, 35 centimeters of fresh snow had fallen on parts of the Brenner motorway during the night, reports Asfinag. Even small inclines were fatal for some road users. Autumn vacationers surprised by the fresh snow, waited at rest stops until the lanes were clear again, reports the media. The important north-south axis towards Italy had to be temporarily closed, said the state police headquarters in Innsbruck.
Brenner motorway A13: Amounts of fresh snow in a short time
Furthermore, many tow vehicles are on the way to get vehicles back on the road. Some of the snow clearing vehicles do not come through and have to stop briefly because of broken down vehicles, as can be found on Instagram. Asfinag posted a short Insta clip about the location on the A13 Brenner motorway on Thursday. The video was recorded from the cockpit of a snow plow in action. And it actually looks very wintry. The edge of the road is completely covered with snow. The median is a white snow line. The view is bad. It’s snowing. The windshield wiper on the winter vehicle is constantly clearing the windshield.
Current situation: Train stopped at the Brenner
Train passengers also have to be prepared for winter conditions. A train on the way to Milan was stopped at the Brenner, reports one traveler. Allegedly the journey should continue after a short delay – as of 10.30 a.m. The reasons for the unscheduled stop are initially unclear. But the heavy snowfall could have messed up the timetable. At the level of the Brennersee on the Brenner Pass, there is currently plenty of snow, as photos from the train window show.
Austria: onset of winter brings a lot of snow in the Alps
The operator of the Asfinag motorway had already warned in advance of the current weather forecasts and the snowfall on higher sections of the route in Tyrol and Vorarlberg. Intensive snowfalls are to be expected, especially along the A 13 Brenner motorway and on the S16 Arlberg expressway.
Also that the snow line on Thursday would sink even further towards the valleys. Asfinag announced that it would activate the winter service early. At the same time, the company is making an urgent appeal to road users to only use winter equipment.

Massive onset of winter in the Alps! Brenner motorway closed – snow plows with problems
The first onset of winter in the Alps caused problems on the A13 Brenner motorway on Monday. In some cases, vehicles were on the road with summer tires despite winter conditions, according to the Schönberg autobahn police. Sections had to be completely blocked at times.
Snow chains are compulsory in Austria
The ÖAMTC reports that snow chains are currently required for all vehicles on Gerlossstrasse over the Gerloss Pass. On the Pass Thurn Straße over the Pass Thurn and on the Arlbergstraße between St. Anton and Langen, snow chains are compulsory for trucks. (ml)
