[Rassegna stampa] – More than two months have now passed since the controversial outcome of the last GP of the 2021 season and still no official decision has been made regarding the main protagonist – despite himself – of that intricate affair: the Race Director Michael Masi. It was he more than any other who ended up in the crosshairs of the protests of Mercedes and above all the ferocious attacks of Brackley’s team principal, Toto Wolff. His fault is that of having forced the regulation, allowing only the drivers who stood in the way of the two great rivals for the title, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, to double under the Safety Car regime, and making the safety car return to the pits in advance with respect to the foreseen procedures.
All this to allow one more final lap of the race to be run, without closing the season under the Safety Car regime. An idea, that of always finishing the race under the green flag, which in reality has been promoted for years by all the teams, including Mercedes. But now it really seems that, in parallel with the investigation that the FIA is conducting on the facts of Yas Marina, it has been decided how to act towards the Australian race director. The most probable option, as we wrote a few days ago on this site, is that of one replacement. According to Paolo Ianieri de The Gazzetta dello Sport Masi will be assigned to another assignment. His place could be taken by current WEC Race Director Eduardo Freitas.
“It will most likely be judgment day today, when the FIA will announce the new F1 race management structure that will no longer see Michael Masi (at least in that role). […]. In the intentions of the new president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the duties of the race director should be unpacked, involving different figures, […]. The clues lead to Eduardo Freitas, now race manager of the WEC. The FIA […] he had promised that by the weekend he would announce news. Postponing the decision would be tantamount to losing face“.
