The Secretary of International Relations at São Paulo City Hall, Marta Suplicy, is one step away from returning to the PT. Marta spoke this Monday, 8th, with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who articulated an alliance for her to be vice-president, for PT, on the ticket of deputy Guilherme Boulos (PSOL), candidate to succeed Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) .
Marta is still on vacation at City Hall and has not yet met with Nunes, but has already met with Boulos. O Estadão it was learned that, before making any announcement, she will speak to the mayor.
At the Palácio do Planalto and at the PT leadership, Marta's return is considered practically certain, as shown by the Estadão last week. Former president Jair Bolsonaro's (PL) endorsement of Nunes' re-election campaign serves as a kind of push for Marta to accept the invitation to return to PT. She does not admit to being on the same platform as Bolsonaro, whom she has already called a “psychopath”.
Lula had already spoken to the City Hall's Secretary of International Relations by phone, before the turn of the year, but only this Monday, the 8th, did the two speak about the new political project in person, at Palácio do Planalto. The assessment is that it will be necessary to mount a broad front to confront Bolsonarism. The capital of São Paulo is seen as the “jewel in the crown” of this political project.
Marta's partnership with Boulos will only not get off the ground if there are any last-minute changes. The wing considered most radical in the PT does not see the return of the former mayor favorably because, when she left the party in 2015, after being a member for almost 35 years, she wrote a letter saying that the party was “the protagonist of a of the biggest corruption scandals”.
In 2016, when she was a senator, Marta voted in favor of the impeachment of then president Dilma Rousseff, whose minister she had been. In 2022, however, she supported Lula's candidacy against Bolsonaro.
Despite the differences, the PT command and PSOL believe that Marta can contribute a lot to City Hall once again being commanded by the left.
Congressman Rui Falcão (PT-SP) attended Marta's meeting with Lula, alongside her husband, Márcio Toledo. Falcão was Government Secretary during Marta's term as mayor of São Paulo, from 2001 to 2004, and today he is one of the organizers of her return to the ranks of the PT for the alliance with Boulos.
