It was the month of March of 2019 when the platform Netflix launched a new docu-series entitled “Formula 1: Drive to Survive”. The latter, totally focused on the background and behind the scenes of the circus, is now preparing for the next publication of the fourth season, on the wave of the success of the three previous editions.
These, in addition to having attracted the public not necessarily passionate about this sport, has also increased the attention of a particular nation towards this series: the United States. Even though they belong to another car culture, basically different from the European one, American viewers liked this Netflix production, and among them the CEO of the Penske Entertainment (subsidiary of Penske Corporation, which owns the homonymous team present in IndyCar and NASCAR), Mark Miles.
In an interview with the site Racer.com, Miles would in fact intend to propose a series similar to that dedicated to Formula 1, but which would focus exclusively on IndyCar, top US open-wheel championship: “We are making an effort to make that happen – explained Miles – recently, a large production house and a producer have developed several ideas and plans to make such a series. I don’t want to go into the details of the operation, but sooner or later something will happen. Once the potential of the product is presented to the right distributors and the most suitable platforms, it will be done. It will not be a “Drive to Survive”, but rather a real documentary. It’s not exactly the same, and I think there are other examples out there similar to our idea. “
“In our case it is not a question of proposing the live broadcast of an event or the organization of a race like the 500 Miglia, but of tell a story. I think there are different ways to seize opportunities, and we will be successful. If at the same time – he concluded – We are in an advanced stage of negotiations with these producers, I don’t see why we shouldn’t start shooting next year. We may also already pass the product on at the end of the season 2022, or carry it out more calmly and propose it for 2023, but I very much hope that the first option will occur ”.
