During his speech at the CDU federal party conference, Merz distributed in all directions. In addition to criticizing the traffic light policy, he clearly differentiates himself from the AfD.
Berlin – Party leader Friedrich Merz kicked off the CDU party conference on Monday (May 6th) with a speech lasting more than an hour. Not only did he set the course for future government responsibility, he also criticized the economic, social and migration policies of the traffic light coalition. But Merz also recognizes the ever-growing right-wing extremism as a central problem – and calls for action against it using all legal means.
“Abolish citizens’ money” – Merz rails against the federal government in his party conference speech
The fact that Germany is becoming increasingly unattractive as an economic location is primarily due to the traffic light’s flawed social policy. According to Merz, there is a lack of incentives to work – also because of social benefits that would seem like an “unconditional basic income”. “We want the so-called Citizen’s money (…) abolish it again,” said Merz. The CDU will introduce a “new basic security” that will support those who really need it.
It is necessary to empower citizens to take personal responsibility. Performance must therefore be worth it again, says Merz. That’s why you also have to reward those who are willing to do more. In this context, the CDU boss is bringing tax relief into play – this could motivate people to work more and strengthen Germany as a business location.
Merz calls Germany a “land of immigration” – diversity, but only with similarities
It is clear that Germany is a country of immigration. But in his speech, Merz criticized the irregular migration policy pursued by the traffic light. This has long been overtaxing Germany’s ability to integrate. “This cannot and must not continue like this,” said Merz.
For diversity to work, a society also needs commonalities. In Germany, these are given by shared values, history and culture. In this context, Merz again refers to the term “leading culture”. “We have to reflect on what unites us. A number of constants are non-negotiable for us,” said Merz.
“Underestimated for years” – Merz doesn’t want to make mistakes with right-wing extremism with Islamism too
“We all have to rightly say today and allow ourselves to be told that we have underestimated right-wing extremism in Germany for years,” Merz summarized in his speech. The same mistake should not be repeated with the “ringleaders of political Islam”. Anyone who does not accept the rules of peaceful coexistence must be dealt with consistently.
Also “parties like that AfD“The values and “our Europe” would be rejected, said Merz at the party conference. This also happens with “ideational and financial help from Putin”. The CDU must defend itself against such political forces and “this ridicule of our principles”. “Anyone who wants to destroy democracy will encounter bitter resistance from the CDU,” adds Merz.
Declaration of war on the traffic lights – “Germany must finally be governed well again”
“We have been in opposition three times in 75 years of the Federal Republic,” said Merz. “The first time 13 years, the second time seven years. We now want to halve this time again.” The CDU leader clearly emphasizes his party’s will: to be back in government responsibility after the next federal election and. According to surveys in which the CDU is currently the strongest party, this could also succeed.
For Merz, a change of government cannot happen quickly enough. If Merz has his way, the CDU would be able to govern even in the event of early elections. “Germany can do better, but Germany must finally be governed well again,” said Merz, once again dishing out criticism against the government.
