The British cyclist Mark Cavendish, 39, achieved the last victory of his career this Sunday at the Criterium Prudential in Singapore, in what was his professional farewell, which he announced the day before.
Cavendish, wearing the number 35, which represents the number of stages he has won in the Tour de France, a record he holds alone ahead of Eddy Merckx since his victory in Saint-Vulbas on July 3, raised his arms in sign of victory for the last time in Singapore.
The Astana Qazaqstan team rider won the sprint, over a 57.5 kilometer route through a circuit in Marina Bay, ahead of two great specialists in the peloton, the Belgians Jasper Philipsen and Arnaud de Lie, while the green jersey of the Tour de France, the Eritrean Biniam Girmay won the points classification.
“I realized in the last five laps that it was the last 15 kilometers of my race. I hadn’t raced since the Tour de France so I missed some things but seeing the incredible job my team did in guiding me I had to give it my all. I wanted to with all my strength this victory. I am very proud to win the Tour de France Prudential Criterium as my last professional race,” confessed the Briton at the end of the race.
Cavendish, who has achieved “everything possible on the bicycle”, retires with a record that includes 166 victories, including 35 in the Tour de France, 17 in the Giro d’Italia, 3 in the Vuelta a España and a World road race in 2011.
Mark Cavendish has a new challenge on the horizon: running the Paris Marathon in 2025
In 2024, it has achieved another milestone. It has been a few weeks since the Briton was knighted by the British royalty.
On the other hand, after hanging up his bike, Mark Cavendish has another challenge on his agenda. He recently announced that he will compete in the Paris Marathon in April 2025 with his brother, thus beginning a foray into athletics.
