Maritime transport Winter surprises shipping in the Arctic Ocean: At least 15 vessels were stranded, including a Finnish vessel

The sea area froze earlier than expected this year. The ships have so far arrived to dismantle two Russian icebreakers.

At least 15 ships are stranded in the Arctic Ocean. Ships sailing in the Eastern Siberian Sea were surprised by the freezing of the sea surface that had taken place in the past compared to previous years.

The matter was reported, among other things The Times, The Moscow Times and The Barents Observer.

According to The Barents Observer, ships trapped in driving ice for several weeks from the beginning of November arrived to remove at least two Russian icebreakers, Vaigach and Novorossiysk.

Stuck the remaining vessels have included an oil tanker and a number of cargo ships carrying, among other things, iron ore.

The dry cargo ship M / S Kumpula of the Finnish shipping company ESL Shipping, which was returning to Europe from Korea, was also left on ice.

It was brought home by a nuclear Vaigach. The shipping company shared a picture of the ship on Twitter.

Last Over the years, ships have been able to navigate the so-called North Sea Route without the help of icebreakers.

This year, however, the 30-centimeter layer of ice had formed in most of the Laptev Sea and the East Siberian Sea as early as the end of October.

According to The Moscow Times, there have been at least 18 ships stuck in the area.
