Marathon running double Olympic winner Eliud Kipchoge won the Tokyo International Marathon at a peak time of 2.02.40 on Sunday. The final time is the third best in Kipchogen’s career, and he was just a minute and a second behind his world record.

Kipchoge decided to win the race at 35 km when he escaped from his Kenyan teammate Amos from Kiprutolta.

“It was great to return to Japan when I managed to win Olympic gold in Osaka last year,” Kipchoge said, thanking the Japanese audience profusely for the encouragement.

Kipruto finished second in the competition on 2.03.13.

The victory in the women’s competition also went to Kenya when Brigid Kosgei reached the finish line in time on 2.16.02. Kosgei was less than two minutes away from the ME time in his name.
